| De eerste hoofdstukken zijn geschreven in 2012 en staan dus vol fouten.Time passed and I did not realize that even though I lost so much, my actions caused me to lose much more. And, the more I lost, the more I changed. My name is Katherina Mercer and this is my story. - Prologue: Reach for the sky:
Year: 1766 Even though the small dagger was in my hand, I knew that it would not provide the security I needed if something went wrong, but it would be enough to scare a potential threat, slowing it down and maybe even paralyzing it. This way, I would have the time to shout for Ethan, who would always come for my rescue. I sighed once while slowly stepping on another branch. This was a more dangerous situation than the regular ten year old girl should be in, but we were born and raised here. We knew how to handle it. Also, it was a lot safer here, in the trees, than it ever would be on the ground. In the trees you would be safe, as long as you watched your steps and made sure you made no mistakes. While, on the ground.. It was then that I noticed that I was being left behind, so I started rushing things a bit. Of course, this was never the right decision. Even though we were only about seven feet above ground, falling down could cost us our life. Not because of the fall, but because of the dangers on the ground. I did not believe in the monsters regular kids believed in, but I am sure that you’d understand what I meant, had you ever seen an angry bear, coming towards you, without anything that could possibly stop it. That is much, much worse than the monsters you once dreamt about. ‘There!’ Ethan’s voice sounded, whispering to William. I bit my lip and moved further. I jumped to another branch, without paying much attention, which caused the action to fail. I landed almost perfectly on the branch. Almost. It caused me to slip and fall down. In a sudden rush of adrenaline, I managed to grab the branch and scream out loud, hoping that this would not be my end. I was not strong enough to hold on, even though I knew it might be my only chance. Now, the roles were reversed. I was the one who was in danger, my prey becoming my hunter. The moose we had hunted on had laid his gaze upon me, which meant that this was not going to end well for me, if no miracle was going to occur in the next moments. My last strength was used and I fell down. I closed my eyes, screaming as if it would help. I already knew that my end was drawing near. That was it. This was my end. Sorry, mama. I have failed. There was a gunshot, followed by the sound of the moose, who was definitely fleeing. No pain had found me, as if my body was paralyzed. But, it definitely was not, since I was still able to move. Carefully, I made my eyes open, noticing that I was saved. I looked around, making sure that the moose was nowhere near me. It did not take long for me to jump up, shocked at what had happened here. Of course, the fact that I did not have to die was very nice, but.. Why? And most of all, how? This came to me in a second. Two men, both wearing the long red coats that were well known in our village, came towards me. Both were frowning while inspecting me. ‘Katherina?’ one of them asked calmly. A frown appeared on my face. ‘They forgot to mention that you look like a little boy,’ the same man said. I did not say anything, just watching the two men. The one who had spoken to me, had this scar from his eye to his nostril. The other man had a very flat nose. Both did not seem very nice people, but they did not seem like the bad guys either. ‘Miss Katherina, we were asked to bring you to your father. Immediately,’ Scar told me. This was when I came to my senses. I had never seen my father and the only things I knew about him, were told to me by my mother. She had told me stories about the brave man he was. About how he was the only one she had ever loved. She had not known about him being a Redcoat when she fell in love with him on the ship that had brought them from England to America. She did not hold a grudge towards them, since she did not know anything about them. The only thing she had refused to accept, was the fact that they were planning to make the Native Americans disappear. This was, of course, because of the fact that she was planning to live with them. Planning to know them, since she had to see for herself what kind of people they were. These men were, without any doubt, the infamous redcoats, which meant that it was true that they were here by my father’s command. A frown appeared on my face. “Where is mommy?” I asked them, wondering. The men sighed once. ‘Killed. Your village has been set on fire,’ flatnose said. ‘As soon as this news reached your father, he send us to come and get you.’ I bit my lip while gazing at flatnose, waiting for them to laugh and tell me that all of this was a joke. But, they did not do that. My eyes went to their weaponry, to the enormous guns they carried with them. There was this kind of knife at the end, which made it a very scary weapon and I was glad they were not turning it against me, but.. I refused to believe what they had told me. “You are lying!” I shouted. It was impossible for mommy to be gone, simply because I did not want her to be. I decided to take a sprint and go after Ethan and William, but the men stopped me. ‘You are coming with us, Lady Mercer.’
